My dog is sick...

They aren't considered man's best friends for nothing.

I know that if our new little chihuahua died, my wife would be miserable. It jumped off the couch a few weeks back, and started yelping, fell over and acted like it had killed itself, she started crying immediately and was almost ready to fall over. I came over and checked the dog, already plotting an emergency trip to the emergency animal hospital. Thankfully, it had just bruised itself a bit, got sore and tender, was timid for a few days but then full speed ahead. It had another episode last week, jumped off of the inlaws couch, slick floor, feet slid out and jammed its jaw into the floor hard. Took a bit, including it shaking its head several times to shake the cobwebs, but was fine thankfully.

That all being said, I paid several hundred dollars for the thing. Why would I just let it die if I could prevent it? Even right now, my wife is on her computer, and the dog is in her lap asleep wearing its pajamas (red flannel ones, very cute). If the dog was charging per hour for happiness it provides, already would be worth 10 times what it cost and we've only had it a few months.

I have 3 chihuahuas and love all of them. Have had them now for 8 years and they still act like little babies.

Donna is a good vet. She has helped my mother out alot with her two dogs and bills/payment. I reckon mom has been going there for several years now and don't trust anyone else but her, lol.

We starting going to Donna the day she opened her practice. It's because of her my oldest dog actually likes going to the vet!

I do use Rasnic in Duffield from time to time - he's very convenient and inexpensive when it comes to things like vaccinations and the allergy shots for my oldest dachshund. He holds 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm walk-in hours.

Update:

The poor girl is so doped up the only thing she can really move is her eyes. She did lift her head up briefly when I came in.

She was watching our every move, watched whoever was talking at any given point.

She's freezing cold (but anesthesia and surgery will do that - they have a heater on her).

We're hoping she might eat something in the morning.

Their office isn't open on the weekends but they'll give us a call each time they check on her.

Hope she gets better.

One huge reason why we like using her as our vet is because she really cares. She gets emotionally involved with her patients and their families. (When my first dog died, she sent me a dish garden and a condolences card - she had taken such good care of my dog.) That would also explain why even though she has the most expensive practice in the area, she's also the most popular and is always booked up.

When Pickle was first brought home I made an appointment with Donna that same day, so I could be assured an appointment time with her when Pickle turned 6 months old (even though I lived in Blacksburg at the time and was surrounded by vet offices).

We always travel all the way over to Indian Ridge. Kind of hate to change but the drive is a factor.

I've heard good things about them.

They are very good and at a reasonable price too.

Might just be a fluke, but I have had 2 really bad experiences with Indian Ridge...

First took them a Springer Spaniel, 7 years old, always been in good health, just got droopy and started loosing weight, wouldn't eat, 6 months of blood work, examinations, $800 worth of bills, ect... I finally just had to put him down, they never had a clue what was wrong with him...

So as a family we thought, no big deal, that was prolly just one of those things. So my little brother who was about 17 at the time had 12 year old cocker spaniel. It had a tumor on its back hip, that it had for about 4 years, It was about the size of a softball. All of the suddon after four years, at her annual shots and check up, they say, you really should think about surgery, this tumor might kill her...So my poor little brother starts flippin out cause he don't want his dog to die because he didn't help her...He asks the risks, they say basically no risk at all, that is't just a harmless tumor, that they will just go in and clip it off and she can go home that afternoon...I tried to talk some sense into him, I told him look she prolly don't have but a couple of years left, so I would just let her live it out in peace...But the doc kept on and on about how he just had to do the surgery...So he finally said ok, sense it's basically risk-free...So they did it, and cut her major artery in her leg, the best thing that could have happened was if she had of bleed to death, but she barelly didn't...So they pumped synthetic blood in her, and put her on doggy life support...She lived for 3 weeks, but was never concious again...He wanted to have her put down when they called to say they had screwed up in surgery, but again they convinced him she would pull through...Man you should have seen that Vet bill!!!!! We had to threaten to get lawyers and all kinds of stuff, and they finally reduced the bill way down...

All of that mess over a 12 year old dog that was making it just fine for her age....

That second story in particular does seem disturbing.

She's a real doll - other than the cotton-eating habit she's one good girl.

Just got her daily update from the vet.
She did pretty good over the weekend.
But she's depressed, and has a distended abdomen. High white blood cell count. Tapped her belly - didn't get a lot of fluid off. They're going to go back in and see what's going on.
This is bad.

We lost her this morning. She will be VERY much missed.

Sorry to hear that. (What happened I thought she was getting better)

Infection set in. There was nothing Donna could do to save her. She tried the 2nd surgery. It was just too much.

Wow--my condolences to you guys. I know how much you both loved that dog. I'm sure Donna did her best--she's a great Vet.

I'm extremely sorry. I've said it before, dogs love unconditionally, so it bothers me losing them more than it does some people.
